Our season begins with a bang because we have the world-renowned pianist Joanna MacGregor to play for us. She can be relied on to do something different and her programme will include arrangements she has made herself of gospel and spiritual music. She will also play Schubert and her main item will be Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

As a Society we are very keen to encourage young people to enjoy chamber music, so we have arranged for Oboeworks, an oboe and string quartet, to run a workshop at St. Anselm’s Preparatory School in Bakewell on the afternoon of their concert here. The programme will include Britten, Schubert and Mozart

The year 2006 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, so we have made sure that his work is played in our first concert of that year. His String Quartet K421 will be performed by the Dominant Quartet who are visiting this country from Russia. The Times described them as an “outstanding, vibrant young quartet” and the remainder of their programme will be by Russian composers – Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

Anyone who has been to the annual opera performances at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester will know how talented their singers are. We have invited three of their stars in the making to give us a concert of song and arias.
We end the season on a big note. The Gaudier Ensemble, whose players are mainly soloists from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, play us out with the ever-popular Beethoven Septet.
